| History |
| The long felt need of the ophthalmologists of Kerala
to have a forum for expressing their views and to discuss with each
other professional matters was fulfilled on 22- 12-1974, the day of
inauguration of the Kerala State Ophthalmological Society (K.S.O.S.)
Now we are in the 30th year and we have changed our name to Kerala
Society of Ophthalmic Surgeons, keeping the short form as K.S.O.S. |
| The idea of the society was rooted first by Dr. Tony
Fernandez of Angamaly and sent letters to all the leading ophthalmologists
in 1973 regarding the formation of the society. Dr. C.E. Ommen, Dr.
P.T. Chacko, Dr. E.T. Kuriakose and Dr.K. P. Mathew reacted positively.
Dr. Tony Fernandez, on a visit to U.S.A, had met two famous Eye Surgeons
Dr. Benedict Rizutti, Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology, New York
Medical college, and Dr. Martin Bodian, Asst Professor of Ophthalmology,
New York Medical college and invited them to Angamaly to conduct workshops
on Keratoplasty, Ptosis, Glaucoma surgery and Orbit reconstruction.
Meanwhile in a meeting convened by Dr. P. T. Chacko and chaired by
Dr. George Puthooran at Ernakulam, the draft of the constitution of
KSOS was passed and following office bearers were elected unanimously. |
| On December 20th & 21st , 1974 a two day workshop
on ‘Keratoplasty and Glaucoma Surgery’, ‘Ptosis
Surgery & Orbit reconstruction’ was conducted at the Little
Flower Hospital Angamaly. Dr Benedict Rizzuti and Dr. Martin Bodian
conducted live surgeries and 26 eye specialists who participated were
really fortunate to see these surgeons in action. |
| On 22nd December 1974 at Hotel Dwaraka, Ernakulam,
Dr. Benedict Rizuti inaugurated and installed Dr. C.E.Oommen as the
Founder President. A Symposium on Cataract was also conducted. |
| “Well begun is half done” so goes the saying
and so it was proved. The KSOS is growing from strength to strength
since then and has been conducting annual conferences and many CME
programs regularly. |
| We had hosted SROC in 1975 at Kanyakumari, in 1978
at Kozhikode and in 1994 at Ernakulam along with our Annual conferences. |
| In 1984.under the dynamic leadership of Dr.Tony Fernandez
and Dr. T. Gopinath Menon, the K.S.O.S conducted the 43 rd annual
conference of All India Ophthalmological Society at Ernakulam, which
was a grand success with a record attendance. In 1999 January the
57th annual conference of AIOS |
| Dr.K.Eapen was the founder editor of our journal (1974).Dr.K.Narayanankutty
took over as the editor in the middle of the term, when Dr.Eapen went
Vienna for Post-Graduate training in Vitreoretinal surgery and continued
for two more years. Dr.T.P.Ittyearah (1978-83) and Dr.N.S.D.Raju (1983-88)
had long stints of five years each. Both of them are highly successful
in raising the standard the journal published in quarterly format
.Dr.K.Krishnankutty of Trichur was editor for two years (1988-’90).He
converted it a bi-monthly in the first year and a monthly journal
in the second year of his editorship. Not only was he successful in
bringing out the journal regularly, but also raised the popularity
of the journal among the ophthalmologist of Kerala and outside the
state through his regular column on innovative techniques .The next
editors Dr.P.I.Mohan (1990-’91), Dr.K.Mahadevan (1991-’94),
Dr.A.Giridhar (1995-99) reverted to the quarterly format and have
strived hard to maintain the high standard of the journal. Dr.Sasikumar
(1999-2001) and Dr.Saikumar (2001-’03) were successful in publishing
the journal in strict quarterly schedule .They changed the outlook
and the content in the current style of Kerala Journal of Ophthalmology. |
| Dr.P.T.Chacko, the Founder Secretary did an excellent
work in putting the society on a firm footing in the early years of
its inception and drafted the constitution of KSOS on the lines of
AIOS with necessary changes. Dr.V.S Gopinath, during his tenure designed
the emblem of K.S.O.S and tried to put some order in the working of
the society. Dr.N.Radhakrishnan, during his tenure enrolled about
200 life members, bringing the total membership to 300 from 99.He
also succeed in improving the day to day work of the society by proper
documentation and maintenance of all registers. Members were given
life membership numbers and were supplied with Identity cards. |
| To streamline the scientific activities, scientific
committee was formed in 1999 with Dr.T.A.Alexander as it’s first
chairman. Later Dr.A.Giridhar and Dr.Noel Moniz were instrumental
in setting high standards for the scientific activities. In the year
2001, the then executive committee directed Dr. Noel Moniz to host
a web site for the society. Drishti 2001 general body elected Dr.
B.Radha Ramanan as the first web site Editor, who later modified it
in to an interactive forum. |
| Dr.K.C Sankara Menon Memorial Award was regularly given
and also instituted was the Dr.C.E.Oommen Memorial award in 1989.
Six senior Ophthalmologists were honored for their outstanding contributions
to the society in the field of ophthalmology. Dr.Siva Reddy award
was also started with contribution from Dr.Siva Reddy. Dr. C.K.Revi,
during his tenure instituted the T.K.Alexander Oration award from
the contributions of Dr. T.A.Alexander. Dr.N.Jayanth has been instrumental
in instituting the “Dr.C.E.Oommen Oration” and Dr.K.S.Subramanian
Memorial award for post-graduate students with the contributions from
his family members. Both of them have contributed to the society in
increasing its popularity and membership which is now more than 650. |
| Many stalwarts of the profession had adorned the presidential
chair with distinction and some of them have left us namely, Dr.C.E.Oomen,
Dr.K.S.Subramanian, Dr.V.Sankaran, Dr.T.A.Joseph, Dr.T.Gopinath Menon,

and we remember with gratitude their selfless service to the society.

He has also been showered with many awards including Dr.B.C.Roy award.

Many of our past presidents and senior members of the society have
actively participated in various National and International conferences
by presenting papers, chairing sessions and conducting workshops. |
| K.S.O.S. regularly gives many awards to our stalwarts
as well as our junior colleagues. The Dr.C.E.Oommen Memorial Award,
T.K Alexander memorial award are both oration awards to senior colleagues.

award are awarded to our junior colleagues. |
| The organization is growing strong day by day not only
in memberships but also in the standard of scientific publications,
presentations and CME programs. Here we must remember that while imbibing
the new techniques in ophthalmic surgery and treatment, we should
strive hard to make available the best to all by a combine effort
so that our society scales to new heights in service to the people
of Kerala. |
